Privacy & Cookie Policy
This policy explains what QuidCompass collects when you visit the site, why we collect it, who else can see it, and what you can do about it. It covers quidcompass.com and any subdomain of it.
Who we are
QuidCompass is an independent personal-finance publisher, founded and operated by Abhishek Sharma. For the purposes of UK GDPR we are the data controller for the personal data described here. You can reach us at hello@quidcompass.com, or through our contact page.
We operate from outside the UK and EEA. Where we or our service providers process your data outside the UK, we rely on the safeguards described in International transfers below.
What we collect
Information you give us
If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect the email address you enter. If you email us, we hold whatever you put in that message for as long as it takes to deal with it. We do not ask for, and you should never send us, financial account details, card numbers or identity documents.
Information collected automatically
When analytics are enabled with your consent, we collect standard web-analytics data: the pages you view, how you arrived (referrer or search), approximate location derived from your IP address, device type, browser and screen size, and how long you stay. We use this in aggregate to understand which guides are useful. We do not use it to build a profile of you as an individual, and we do not sell it.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files stored on your device. We group ours into three categories. Nothing except the strictly necessary category is set until you consent, and you can change your mind at any time using the cookie settings link in the footer.
| Category | What it does | Set without consent? |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Remembers your cookie choice so we don't ask again. Stored on your device only; never sent anywhere. | Yes — the site cannot work without it |
| Analytics | Google Analytics 4, loaded through Google Tag Manager. Measures page views and traffic sources in aggregate. | No |
| Advertising | Not in use. We do not currently serve advertising, so no advertising cookies are set. | No |
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Doing so will not stop you reading anything on QuidCompass.
Advertising
QuidCompass does not currently display third-party advertising, and no advertising cookies are set. We intend to carry advertising served by Google in future. When we do, this section will apply and this page will be updated to say so:
Google, as a third-party vendor, would use cookies to serve ads on this site, enabling it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to QuidCompass and other sites. You would be able to opt out of personalised advertising in Google Ad Settings and opt out of third-party vendors' use of cookies at aboutads.info. How Google uses data from sites that use its services is described at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Affiliate links
Some links on QuidCompass are affiliate links. Where an affiliate programme is live, clicking one may pass a referral identifier to that provider so they can attribute a signup to us. That identifier tells them the visit came from QuidCompass; it does not tell us who you are. See our affiliate disclosure for what is and isn't live.
Newsletter
If you subscribe, your email address is stored with our email provider so we can send you the newsletter. We use it for that and nothing else. Every email carries an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you from the list. We do not share or sell subscriber lists.
Why we are allowed to do this
Our lawful bases under UK GDPR are:
- Consent — for analytics cookies, advertising cookies, and sending you the newsletter. You can withdraw it at any time.
- Legitimate interests — for keeping the site secure and available, and for replying to messages you send us.
Who else sees your data
We do not sell personal data. We share it only with the service providers that run the site: our hosting and CDN provider (Cloudflare), Google (Tag Manager and Analytics, with your consent) and our email provider for the newsletter. Each processes data on our instructions under its own terms.
How long we keep it
Analytics data is retained in aggregate for up to 14 months. Newsletter subscriptions are held until you unsubscribe. Emails you send us are kept for up to 24 months and then deleted.
International transfers
Because we operate from outside the UK and EEA, and because our service providers are global, your data may be processed in countries outside the UK — including India and the United States. Where that happens we rely on the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or equivalent contractual safeguards offered by those providers.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- ask what personal data we hold about you, and get a copy
- have inaccurate data corrected
- have your data deleted
- restrict or object to how we use it
- withdraw consent at any time, without affecting what happened before
- ask us to transfer your data to you or someone else
Email hello@quidcompass.com and we will respond within one month. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
QuidCompass is written for adults making their own money decisions and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes materially we update the date at the top of the page. If the change affects what we do with data you have already given us, we will say so prominently rather than quietly editing the page.
